Gibson Historic Collection 1958 Les Paul Plaintop Washed Cherry with Case in 1958, in an effort to jump start the sales of the Les Paul model, Gibson decided to abandon the familiar gold finish and use a translucent, cherry sunburst finish which would show off the highly figured maple tops that were often used on Les Pauls.
