Description
The Gibson Custom "Collector's Choice" series cracks open the greatest vaults of vintage instruments in the world, allowing players the opportunity to own replicas of one-of-a-kind historic guitars. We've contacted some of the world's most prominent collectors of rare instruments and convinced them to share their greatest prizes in this unique and unprecedented program. In embarking on this series of limited-run "Collector's Choice" instruments, Gibson Custom is starting with one of the most ... desirable artist guitars of all time: the legendary Les Paul once owned by Gary Moore, and now a treasured part of the Melvyn Franks collection.
While any 1958-'60 Les Paul Standard is a rare and desirable guitar today, those played by major artists are even more highly prized. Given its history, the 1959 Les Paul Standard formerly owned by Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore-and represented in every minutiae by the Collector's Choice #1: 1959 Les Paul Standard-is, for many players and collectors, the Holy Grail of Les Pauls. Not only is it a stunning original example with a highly figured top and a beautiful, faded "unburst" finish, it's a guitar with a fascinating configuration, with the wiring and orientation of the neck pickup reversed to create a unique "out of phase" middle position tone. Moore purchased the guitar in the mid-'70s and played it on recordings with Thin Lizzy, including "Still in Love with You" and "Waiting for an Alibi," and afterward, as a solo artist, before retiring the '59 Les Paul and eventually selling it to British-born guitar collector Melvyn Franks in 2006.
A Collector's Dream Les Paul, Available to You
Les Paul aficionados have long clamored for a reproduction of this legendary Les Paul, and the Collector's Choice #1: 1959 Les Paul Standard finally nails it with two finishes: the Gary Moore Aged and Signed Edition and the VOS Melvyn Franks Edition. From the luscious deep-amber "unburst" finish on the highly figured maple top, to the reversed neck pickups (with adjustable pole pieces facing the bridge), to the missing silver inserts on the top two "Top Hat" control knobs, to the Bumble Bee tone capacitors, this Custom Shop creation embodies a guitar that collector's have lusted after for more than four decades. In addition, it captures all the historically accurate details that make a Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul the most accurate reproduction of the 'Burst ever produced. Details such as the deep-set long neck tenon, correct body top binding in the cutaway, accurate BurstBucker PAF-humbucking pick reproductions, rounded '59 neck profile, and 17-degree back-angled headstock all give this guitar the feel and tone of the real deal. Produced in strictly limited numbers, the Collector's Choice #1: 1959 Les Paul Standard will be offered in 125 examples aged by acclaimed artisan Tom Murphy, with subsequent instruments treated to Gibson's VOS process. The aged guitars will be accompanied by a Collector's Choice #1 COA personally signed by British guitar legend Gary Moore while the VOS versions will be accompanied by a Collector's Choice #1 Melvyn Franks COA. All guitars come protected in a Custom Shop hardshell case and include an Owner's Manual, full warranty documentation and adjustment literature.
Body and Finish
Made from the classic tonewood combination of carved maple top and one-piece mahogany back, and dressed in a faded nitrocellulose amber "unburst" finish atop a highly figured maple cap, the Collector's Choice #1 1959 Les Paul Standard embodies the Les Paul owned and played by Gary Moore. Of this limited run, 125 examples will be aged by Tom Murphy to accurately match the original guitar, while the remainder will be treated to Gibson's VOS process.
Pickups and Electronics
A pair of BurstBucker humbucking pickups accurately replicate the tone and performance of the original PAF pickups in the Collector's Choice #1 '59 Les Paul, and are installed to replicate the "reverse-phase" center position. These pickups are routed through high-quality CTS pots for volume and tone, with "bumble bee" tone capacitors, and a Switchcraft three-way toggle switch.
Neck, Fingerboard and Headstock
The solid one-piece mahogany neck is carved to an accurate, chunky, rounded '59 profile and is capped with a rosewood fingerboard with acrylic pearloid trapezoid inlays and 22 medium-jumbo frets. Its headstock is back-angled to the traditional 17 degrees, and the entire appendage is glued into the guitar's body with a deep-set long neck tenon, a joint known to aid strength and resonance.
Hardware
The Collector's Choice #1 1959 Les Paul Standard features a nickel-plated Tune-o-matic (ABR-1) bridge and stopbar tailpiece, while a set of nickel-plated Sperzel tuners combine an authentic vintage look with efficient modern performance. 125 examples will be aged by Tom Murphy to accurately match the original guitar, while the remainder will be treated to Gibson's VOS process.
