Sonar désigne un logiciel de MAO équivalent des séquenceurs musicaux matériel développé par la société Cakewalk (Roland).
Aujourd'hui la gamme dans sa version 8.5 se décline en différentes versions Home Studio LE/Home Studio XL/Studio edition /Producer Edition, cette dernière étant la plus évoluée.
Sonar a été le premier logiciel à supporter nativement le mode 64 bits indispensable pour les gros projet audio ( chargement des banques de son et exécution des effets en temps réel). Cet atout majeur ne prend son sens que si des drivers matériels et des plugin VST DirectX sont compatible 64 bits. Cakewalk et Steinberg (logiciels Cubase et Nuendo) sont les seules société ayant développées des technologies compatible avec les plug in VST 32 et 64 bits (voir article VST). [réf. souhaitée]
Sonar propose comme Pro Tools une Surface de contrôle de nom SONAR V-Studio 700 permettant de faciliter la prise en main du logiciel.
Son fonctionnement est comparable à Ableton Live, Ardour, ACID Pro, Digital Performer, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Pro Tools et Cubase.
Il comporte notamment un séquenceur MIDI et audio, des synthétiseurs virtuels et des effets MIDI et audio.
